I GOT AN AWARD

A couple weeks ago I emailed a short announcement about an award I received. Today, I want to elaborate a little.

Orange County Realtors sent me the following email from Dave Stefanides:

In the spirit of recognizing our members, I am proud to announce a new, esteemed class of members – our Hall of Legends. Our Leadership & Professional Development Committee elected to honor current and past leaders who have made lasting contributions to the real estate industry. The Hall of Legends recognition is reserved for members of Orange County REALTORS® who have demonstrated outstanding leadership benefiting the board, their colleagues, the community, and the profession as a whole. We want to honor Mr. Gomer for his incredible, prominent and extensive contributions to real estate education!

Also, Dave added a note in his succinct and pithy fashion:

You hold a special place not just in OCR history but in my heart – you’ve been ever so kind to me and always a mentor with a wise word for association training, government affairs, and politics!

What is My Background in Real Estate?

It started a while ago.

1961: I got my Real Estate License (#257862) and started working in Van Nuys as Director of Property Management for the young Forest E. Olson Company. A year later, I transferred to Commercial sales with FEO.

1963: I sold a couple of apartment homes and started Duane Gomer, Inc.

1963-1978: Duane Gomer, Inc. was a property management and Syndication company based in the San Fernando Valley. During this time, I taught real estate extension classes in the prestigious UCLA Anderson School of Business.

I also really enjoyed being appointed a court receiver for apartment houses in litigation. A hobby was giving keynote speeches for apartment associations to find clients. Another hobby was writing columns for what was then the Valley Green Sheet.

1978 – Present: The State requirement for continuing education courses began at this time. I had the choice: tenants or students. I chose students and became one of the first companies authorized to present the courses.

For over 46 years, Duane Gomer Education has presented DRE-approved courses. Our business model for many years was working with Realtor Associations, Title Companies, and Franchises. DJ and I would like to thank all the amazing people we have met over the years who contributed to any success we have achieved.

Today, we present DRE-approved courses (both Continuing Education and Statutory), license prep seminars, Notary courses approved by the Secretary of State, Mortgage Loan Origination courses approved by the NMLS, and Consumer Courses.

Duane Gomer Education is still open in Mission Viejo. Our contact information is:

And yes, I am still available for questions. Some past students ask, “Why are you still working?” Someone once told me, “Find something you can do and enjoy, and find a way to get paid for doing it.” And as the health experts say, “Have something to do when you get up each morning.”

Attached is a photo from my Legend Award day, along with a recent photo with my wife and co-owner, DJ Gomer. See you around campus.
